Part TimeThis is a Level 2 Qualification for learners who wish to become a Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant or a Special Needs Assistant in a school environment.This Level 2 Certificate is now the new recognised qualification and is appropriate for staff who work in schools supporting teaching and learning. Candidates must be well motivated to learn independently but are fully supported throughout the Certificate by a qualified Assessor. It is suitable for learners working in roles that support pupils’ learning including teaching assistants, learning support assistants and special needs assistants.

This course can also be undertaken as an Apprenticeship.


You will need to be working or volunteering in a school environment as you will need to show competence in both knowledge and skills.

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification but you will need to be at least 16 years of age.


This qualification will enable you to develop the knowledge and skills needed when supporting teaching and learning in schools. It covers a wide range of areas including children and young people’s development, supporting those with disabilities or special educational needs and communication and professional relationships.

This qualification is made up of mandatory and optional units which are based on knowledge and skills and includes optional units that will allow you to achieve above the level of qualification.


To gain the qualification you will need to achieve 30 credits with 24 credits coming from the mandatory units.

You will then need to achieve a minimum of 3 credits from optional units in Group A and 3 credits from optional units in Group B.
