This e-learning course is developed and implemented jointly with the Frankfurt School - UNEP Collaborating Cente.

The Paris Agreement marks the beginning of a new era with the focus shifting from finding a consensus on the common goals to realising jointly agreed goals. “Making finance flows consistent with a pathway towards low greenhouse gas emissions and climate-resilient development” (Article 2 c of the Paris Agreement) will require a significant increase in funding – with new instruments and approaches required to mobilize a broad range of investors and to achieve scalability in financing climate action. Financing the global energy transition will be one key building block.

Decreasing prices for renewables combined with increasing regulatory risk for traditional fossil fuels make Renewable Energy (RE) more competitive and attractive for commercial investors.

Frequent Asked Questions

· What are the objectives of this course?

This course will help you to understand two different perspectives on financing climate and RE projects: firstly, why markets alone might fundamentally not be able to trigger investment in a way that environmental issues are appropriately taken into account and which policy instruments are available to correct these so-called “market failures”. Secondly, the project perspective of investors or financiers confronted with the specifics of RE and EE financing including but not limited to dealing with the specific risk profile of capital intense business models in an often policy and regulation driven market. Understanding both perspectives and the interlinkage is key to policy design and investment decisions in the years to come.

· Who is it intended for?

This course has a clear focus on finance and is suitable for both public and private sector practitioners, including entrepreneurs, project developers, private investors, initiator/fund houses, international development finance consultants and managers, plant operators and manufacturers, engineers and advisory professionals (e.g. law firms, business and tax consultants). Other interested parties, such as academics in relevant fields, are of course also welcome to register to the course. The course aims to explain the specifics of climate and renewable energy finance. Pre-experience in (mainstream) banking and finance is therefore helpful but not required. Participants without basic knowledge in finance should accommodate for additional study time. Furthermore, proficient knowledge in English is required as well as access to high speed internet.

· Requirements

English Proficiency / Reliable Internet Connection.

What I would highlight: My studies at Frankfurt School of Finance & Management taking the Certified Expert in Climate & Renewable Energy Finance course was a great experience. The concise lectures that were well articulated and the support from e-Campus team made learning fun and engaging. More so the eye-opening on global issues on climate change, renewable energy and finance thereof is truly precious. The ultimate knowledge gained is invaluable and worth the time and effort. I am already applying this knowledge in my work in international development finance. Thank you all for making it happen.

What I would highlight: Overall, the course was excellently organized, well managed and gave a great insight into the different types of finance available for climate and renewable energy projects. As someone without a finance background, I found the first few units were a very useful introduction to the topics of climate finance and environmental economics, making the later units easier to follow. The format of the online course with short tests at the end of each unit made it easier to stick to the proposed deadlines and keep up with the work. Trainers were always quick to respond to any questions raised by participants and this engagement really made the learning process easier. The online platform was easy to use and the forums provided a great space for discussions on course material.

What I would highlight: Fairly extensive course with a good balance between historical background, policy and finance related topics with regards to Climate and Renewable Energy.
What could be improved: 1. Introducing some mandatory deadlines (e.g. passing certain units, etc.) earlier in the term could be beneficial. 2. I would like to have seen a little bit more hands on financial modelling and possibly a bit less theory on policy, etc.

What I would highlight: Online tests for each module and the exam. Interesting subject matter. The forums. The exam format with mix of multi choice and long answers.
What could be improved: The modules based on pdf handouts were not a very interactive learning format.

What I would highlight: Value for money, flexible delivery method. An Summary for each course would have been good.
What could be improved: To much knowledge to build in a short time. A summary of each unit would be very helpful, the online questions can focus more on the important aspects.

What I would highlight: I liked the flexibility at which I could attend the course. The blended delivery of both audio and reading material is fantastic and breaks the class room monotony. I deepened my understanding of excel workings in financial modelling, calculation of capital budgeting ratios.
What could be improved: The need for high speed internet in order to access the audios, most times i experienced buffering and encountered additional costs in accessing audio material from internet cafes with high uninterrupted speeds.

What I would highlight: The Certified Expert in Climate & Renewable Energy Finance program is definitely the greatest online course experience i’ve had. The modules are designed around the essential that one could barely feel he is enrolled in an online course. For someone like me who is not familiar with e-learning i have to say that the CECRF Team has convinced me that online courses could be as easy as pie. Thanks to the training received i can now assess the financial viability of any RE project. I particularly loved the writing paper exercise although papers were not finally published. I came up with a sound writing paper on the « Financing Offshore Wind Energy: Risk Drivers and Investor Return-The case of Germany ». Anyone who really wants to test his full understanding of the issues related to RE Finance should undergo such an analytical exercice. The FS-team clearly understood that. Well experienced tutors and the variety of professionals contributed to my solid performance. I think Germans have proved again their reputation of being pragmatic people. I am proud to be a member of the first graduating class of the CECRF.

What I would highlight: I just wanted to express my thanks for the interesting, engaging, and above all useful course. I have been surprised in how much I have used what I learned on a nearly daily basis in my current work. It is relevant and up to date, and being able to get into the details makes all the difference. So, thanks for having put together a very applicable program! As you note, it is a field that will be active for some time to come, so I can imagine crossing paths with you in the future.
