Course programme

Chemical engineers turn chemical discoveries into safe, affordable and sustainable processes for the manufacture of products essential in a modern society. As a chemical engineer, you could be in demand all over the world working to meet global challenges in matters of health, environment and energy.

Your Degree

All of our programmes are professionally accredited by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE). Our four-year MEng programmes are the preferred option for students wishing to take a direct route to Chartered Engineer status; those taking the three-year BEng will need to complete a period of further training to achieve this.

For all degree programmes you will follow a common curriculum for the first two years, so a final decision between the different routes can be delayed until the end of the second year when you will have greater experience on which to base your choice. Applying for an MEng initially keeps more options open to you. Our core programme is also designed to develop transferable management, business, professional and personal skills.

In the third year, compulsory courses are supplemented by options dependent on the programme you select. If you choose the BEng degree, you will complete your studies at the end of the third year.

For the MEng programmes, you will spend the final year studying further compulsory and optional courses. If you have opted for the Study Abroad MEng programme, you will spend a year at a selected university in Europe, the USA or Australia.

We are committed to, and encourage you to take, a formal industrial training (sandwich) year during your degree programme. This is usually during the year before your final study year, and provides invaluable experience.

Your career

You will have many employment opportunities in sectors such as pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, oil and gas production, contract engineering and manufacturing. You will also be well prepared to consider further study at Master’s or research level at UCL or elsewhere.

There are excellent opportunities and career prospects for graduate chemical engineers, both within the UK and overseas. The rewards open to you are attractive – the average income of a trainee chartered engineer, according to the IChemE, is consistently higher than that of graduates of other engineering disciplines. Furthermore, you need not restrict your career to the process industry, as you will be highly employable in sectors such as management consultancy and finance.

The department has a Careers Adviser who arranges company visits/presentations, maintains links with the main employers of graduates and works closely with the UCL Careers Service.

The following examples are drawn from data collected on behalf of the Higher Education Statistics Agency for the 2005-2007 graduating cohorts as part of a survey of first career destinations of UK/EU graduates six months only after graduation.
