Our Chemistry with Biological and Medicinal Chemistry degree is a specialist course. It's designed to give you the knowledge and skills you'll need to succeed in the healthcare and pharmaceuticals sectors. Employers in these areas need chemists who can work with complex genome datasets and tackle challenges such as antibiotic resistance.

You'll study core chemistry topics, as well as areas of biology and medicine that are at the heart of cutting-edge scientific research and potential medical treatments. As the degree progresses, you'll investigate concepts such as computer-aided drug discovery and how medicines progress to market.

In year one, alongside chemistry lectures and labs, you get lectures in biochemistry and physiology with pharmacology. You'll also take maths classes so that you have the core maths skills needed for this degree. If you have A Level Maths but not A Level Physics (or equivalent), you'll take both our Physical Principles in Chemistry and Mathematics for Chemists modules.

The course will give you lots of practical experience, building up to your extended final-year project, where you'll work in a professional research lab on a project at the cutting edge of science. We'll give you a laboratory resource pack - which includes a lab coat, safety glasses and safety gloves - so that you can do practical work right from the start of your degree. In your third year you'll carry out a month-long group research project in chemical biology. By then, you'll be able to handle sensitive chemicals and conduct experiments over multiple days.
