Course programme

  • Over the three year course, you undertake six semesters of University-based learning at both Wolverhampton and Walsall Campuses, and you spend at least 120 days divided between a range of different schools at different times during the three years.
  • Your University tutor is available to assist you throughout your training, and every effort is made to ensure you have high-quality tuition and school placements, where you can learn from experienced teachers and lecturers.
  • All course modules provide examples of good practice in teaching which you will reflect upon as you develop your own teaching style
  • You will study chemistry beyond school level so you have an appreciation of the subject beyond that which you would normally teach at GCSE level. This means you would have the subject knowledge to teach A Level Chemistry. You will however expected to participate actively in your own learning and professional development of other aspects of the science curriculum.
  • Teaching on the course reflects a variety of methodologies that will prepare you for life in the classroom including practical work for both demonstration and individual investigation, teacher-led debates, pupil-led exploration, peer-group discovery and the provision of individual targets.
  • You will be assessed in a variety of ways including examinations, written assignments. laboratory work, classroom based investigations and other school-based activities, and appraisals of practical teaching skills.
  • Typical modules may include:
    • Aspects of chemistry that build on your level 3 knowledge through teaching by members of the university chemistry team. Topics will include Organic and inorganic chemistry, physical and analytical chemistry plus associated practical work
    • Education theory modules which you be able to implement during your school based training
    • Observation of teaching, before undertaking ‘sheltered’ teaching activities, for example teaching parts of lessons or groups of pupils within a class
    • You will have a tutor who will provide guidance and academic counselling for all the chemistry topics you will study and a separate tutor to guide your work in schools.
    • Progression to teaching single or short sequences of lessons
    • Development of teaching skills as you move to sustained sequences of lessons
    • Research in the University and school on the use of practical work in the teaching of your subject
