Our MChem Study in Industry course is a research-intensive chemistry degree. It combines the core training of our standard MChem with the experience of working in a chemical company during your third year.

During your 12-month placement in the third year, you'll work full-time, doing research in an industrial setting. Our students find placements in organisations from across the chemical sector, including multinational companies like GlaxoSmithKline and Unilever, as well as SMEs.

When you return to Sheffield in the fourth year, you'll apply your knowledge and research skills to an extended project in one of our cutting-edge academic labs.

We'll give you a laboratory resource pack - which includes a lab coat, safety glasses and safety gloves - so that you can do practical work right from the start of your degree.

In year one, there are lectures, lab classes, and maths classes. For the maths classes, we take into consideration your highest maths qualification to ensure teaching is at the right level for you.

The first year gives you the flexibility to study modules from subjects across the University. Popular choices include: Physical Principles for Chemistry (compulsory for students who don't have an A Level in physics), Chemistry in the World Around Us, and The Origin Of the Solar System.

We run lectures that teach you the skills you'll need to plan your year in industry. There are also CV writing and interview workshops, and you'll get advice from experts working in the chemical industry.

After the first year, all of your time is devoted to chemistry. You'll do more practical work as the course progresses. By your third year you'll be well prepared for the industrial placement. During your year in industry, you'll study selected topics from year three of the MChem course by distance learning. This will ensure you're ready for the advanced lectures in year four.
