Multivariate methods for process development and control are becoming increasingly popular in Norwegian and international industries. The use of chemical instrumentation, together with more traditional process variables such as temperature and pressure, for on-line and at-line analyses of raw materials, intermediate products, and end product quality is an important element in control systems. Discharge and energy consumption minimisation are other important topics for process chemometrics. The aim of the program is to provide you with expert knowledge in multivariate data analysis and modelling, together with a broad understanding of more classical process disciplines. After graduation you will have obtained an operational competence in general problem solving within the process industries.

The Master¿s programme in chemometrics gives a broad basic understanding of current challenges in the field. The work with the master thesis involves analysing measurements and evaluating the results in light of the hypotheses that are tested. The study will give experience with oral and written presentation of results and theories, and training to read and evaluate relevant scientific literature.

About this course

The master's programme leads to the degree Master of Science in Process Technology. It is a two year programme (120 ECTS credits).

Learning Outcomes
  • After a completed Master¿s degree in Chemometrics the candidate should:
Knowledge
  • transform and reduce large amounts of data to understandable information
  • use mathematical and statistical methods for multi-variable data analysis of measurement results
  • do experimental research planning with the aim to extract as much information and knowledge as possible in as few attempts as possible
  • show that one has good knowledge in chemometrics in general, and specialized insight in a smaller area connected to the Master degree project
Skills
  • carry out an independent, limited research project under supervision, but with a large degree of independence and own initiative, and in coherence with good ethical conduct
  • manage and present scientific data, discuss precision and accuracy and use programming tools to analyse and process data
  • analyse problems in chemometrics and discuss ways to explore these with the aid of theory and experimental methods
  • orient oneself in the scientific community and collect, analyse and utilize necessary knowledge and tools needed to carry out a research project
  • analyse and critically evaluate scientific sources of information and apply these to structure and formulate reasoning and new ideas within chemometrics
  • analyse, interpret and discuss own results in a scientifically sound and critical way, and in light of data and theories within his/her own field
