This programme is aimed at applicants wishing to pursue a career at sea. Students will either have a sponsoring company or be undertaking the qualification in their own right. The HND, when combined with certain professional qualifications, will entitle successful students to apply to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency for a Certificate of Competency ( for employment as a chief officer on board merchant vessels). For applicants who have already completed an HNC Nautical Science, this course precedes the sea service required to qualify for Chief Mate (unlimited) Certificate of Competency.

Course programme
HND builds on the knowledge gained at HNC and develops core areas of study to enable problem solving from a management level. Students will be able to evaluate a wide range of information and will develop the research skills needed to complete a major project. Students will also achieve professional level practice skills through on board training.
- Develop the skills required to manage and control the safe navigation of the vessel in all conditions.
- Develop the skills required to manage and control vessel operations in compliance with current legislation.
- Develop a sound understanding of shipboard management issues and techniques.
- Develop a sound understanding of the ship Masters role with respect to the legal aspects of managing the navigation and operation of the vessel.
- Develop an understanding of the vessels propulsion maintenance and engineering requirements.
- Prepare candidates for the MCA written and Oral examinations at Chief Mate Level.
