This short course looks at the lives of children growing up across cultures and contexts globally.
You'll explore in detail ways to support and provide services for children and their families.
There will be a particular focus on disabled children and the impact of impairment on their lives.
The course takes an inclusive, lifespan and rights-based approach rather than separating issues for children with disabilities from those of their non-disabled peers.
It will help you to:
critically evaluate literature relating to children, child development and childhood disability
be aware of major historical researchers and their theories or approaches
plan and produce academic work that engages with current ideas and research and incorporates an independent, individual perspective

Course programme
The course will provide a broad cross-disciplinary, multi-agency approach to consider different models of service provision, particularly in early child development, health and education.
Using inclusive, lifespan and rights-based approaches, you'll explore:
- issues of ‘typical’ and ‘atypical’ development
- how impairments or illness may give rise to disadvantage and/or disability, impacting on children and their families’ quality of life and wellbeing
- ways in which children living in very diverse contexts can be given the best life chances, irrespective of their impairments or health conditions
- current issues and controversies in promoting children’s development and wellbeing and explore key concepts and dilemmas in childhood and disability studies
