Course programme

This course is delivered via workbook for you to complete in your own time and each candidate will receive a A4 Training Certificate Upon completing this course, you should: •Be able to identify possible indicators of child abuse

•Know how to respond if a child confides in you and discloses information that prompts you to suspect abuse

•Know how to make a referral to children’s social care

•Understand the need for good record keeping and documentation The abuse or mistreatment of children is not a new problem; it has been recognised since Victorian times. However, it is only recently, with the enactment of the Children Act 1989, the Human Rights Act 1998, and the Protection of Children Act 1999, that children have enjoyed legal protection from abuse. Of the 12 million children in the UK (Cawson et al, 2000):

•7% suffer serious abuse at the hands of carers and family;

•25% experience violence or abuse in the home;

•over one-third are bullied at school;

•20% of children regularly shoulder adult responsibilities at an early age.
