How is the course structured?
The Level 3 Child Psychology course is divided into twelve comprehensive modules:

Module 1: Babies from Birth to One Year

By the end of this module you will:

  • Be able to identify the importance of bonding
  • Recognise the social and emotional development of babies from birth through to the age of one year
  • Have awareness of the innate reflexes of new born babies
  • Evaluate the benefits of testing at ‘milestones’.

Module 2: Stages and Sequences of Social and Emotional Development

By the end of this module you will:

  • Understand the importance of social and emotional develop
  • Have awareness of the ages and stages that children go through
  • Identify three of the main theories
  • Have theoretical knowledge of the need to provide good role models
  • Recognise some of the barriers to babies and children achieving their milestones
  • Understand the importance of unconditional love.

Module 3: Language and Linguistic Skills

By the end of this module you will:

  • Identify the many forms of communication
  • Define the term pre-linguistic
  • Understand the difference between active and passive communication
  • Recognise the importance of providing children with opportunities to develop their skills
  • Evaluate the importance of body language.

Module 4: Cognitive Development

By the end of this module you will:

  • Recognise the importance of cognitive development
  • Be aware of some of the main psychological theories in cognitive development
  • Understand the need for babies and children to have appropriate opportunities and experience to develop their intellectual ability
  • Gain knowledge of the unconscious mind including the id, the ego and the superego.

Module 5: The Importance of Play

By the end of this module you will:

  • Identify many of the benefits of play
  • Have knowledge of the skills that children can gain through play
  • Understand the different types of activities and their benefits to children
  • Recognise the difference between adult led and child led play
  • Gain knowledge of how to develop children’s independence through play
  • Evaluate the benefits of play therapy
  • Understand the consequences of children not being able to play.

Module 6: Psychologists and their Theories

By the end of this module you will:

  • Recognise some of the most influential psychologists in the field of child psychology
  • Identify some of the different fields of psychology
  • Gain knowledge and understanding of the benefits of research and studies
  • Understand the need to explore how children develop their learning and skills.

Module 7: The Nature/Nurture Debate

By the end of this module you will:

  • Understand the differences between nature and nurture
  • Evaluate evidence supporting each argument of the nature/nurture debate
  • Recognise the importance of human interaction with others.

Module 8: Moral Development

By the end of this module you will:

  • Recognise the value of providing good role models
  • Gain knowledge of the chronology of moral development

Module 9: Differences in Gender

By the end of this module you will:

  • Understand how gender is affected according to social learning theory
  • Understand how gender is affected according to cognitive behaviourist’s theory
  • Have awareness of how society sees gender roles
  • Examine the role of the endocrine system
  • Gain knowledge of the different styles of learning including, visual, auditory and kinaesthetic.

Module 10: Developing Confidence in Children

By the end of this module you will:

  • Recognise the importance of positive language
  • Understand the need to help children develop their confidence
  • Identify the benefits of building a positive self esteem
  • Have awareness of the barriers to developing confidence in children
  • Understand the effects of low self-confidence

Module 11: Preparing Children for Nursery/School

By the end of this module you will:

  • Understand the value of learning self-help skills in building children’s confid
  • Recognise the importance of preparing children for nursery/school
  • Identify the benefits of helping children to make sense of their day
  • Recognise the continuing cycle that often appears in children’s lives
  • See things from a child’s perspective
  • Identify the benefit of nursery and schools ‘settling in policy’.

Module 12: How to have Happy Children

By the end of this module you will:

  • Understand the benefits of providing a happy life for children
  • Recognise the need for effective and positive communication
  • Identify the need for developing confidence in children
  • Evaluate the benefits of showing love and affection
  • Have an awareness of the effects of bullying
  • Understand the value of providing experiences and opportunities.

Module 13: Child Psychology as a Science

By the end of this module you will:

  • Describe and explain research methods used in child psychology and be able to point out the strengths and weaknesses of each one
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how different research methods and research designs can be used to test a specific hypothesis
  • Describe ethical issues associated with research in child psychology and explain how they can be dealt with
  • Describe and explain the major approaches (biological/evolutionary, psychodynamic, behavioural, cognitive, humanistic and social constructionist) associated with child psychology and be able to point out the strengths and weaknesses of each one.

Module 14 : Early Socialisation

By the end of this module you will:

  • Describe, explain and evaluate theories and studies in relation to attachment.
  • Describe, analyse and evaluate Bowlby’s maternal deprivation hypothesis.
  • Describe and explain research into day care and be able to point out the strengths and weaknesses of the studies discussed.

Module 15 : The development of language and thought

By the end of this module you will:

  • Describe the main stages of language development from birth to five and give examples of the features of language produced at each stage.
  • Describe, explain and evaluate theories and studies in relation to language development.
  • Critically evaluate the methods used by Piaget in understanding children’s cognitive development.
  • Describe, explain and evaluate theories and studies in relation to cognitive development

Module 16 : Gender and moral development

By the end of this module you will:

  • Describe, explain and evaluate theories and studies in relation to gender development.
  • Explain the term ‘social construct’ and discuss the idea that gender is a social construct.
  • Describe, explain and evaluate theories and studies in relation to moral development.
  • Describe, explain and evaluate Eisenberg’s theory of pro-social reasoning.

Module 17 : Social development and the family

By the end of this module you will:

  • Describe, explain and evaluate research findings on the development of theory of mind.
  • Describe and evaluate Selman’s stage model and biological explanations of the development of perspective taking.
  • Describe different parenting styles and evaluate their effects on child development
  • Describe, explain and evaluate theories of aggression in children.

Module 18 : The nature/nurture debate

By the end of this module you will:

  • Describe, explain and evaluate theories and studies in relation to perception.
  • Discuss perceptual development in relation to the nature/nurture debate.
  • Understand how intelligence is measured.
  • Describe, explain and evaluate theories of intelligence.
  • Discuss the development of intelligence in relation to the nature/nurture debate
