Course programme

Year 1

The course comprises of 15 units that cover: child development; child health; play and learning; how to observe children; international perspectives on childcare and early years; preparing for school readiness; and how to help children develop emerging literacy and numeracy skills. There are two competency-based professional practice elements carried out in different age ranges in settings. You are required to gain 400+ hours in placement across the first year of study. It is important that you work with the placement coordinator to ensure you are working towards the correct placement. Year one will also include an externally-assessed submission which is completed under controlled conditions.

Year 2

After the certificate you can apply for CACHE level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education (Early Years Educator) – course code C5711. You will continue with subjects across a range of areas including: research skills; curricula in early years; and building your professional portfolio in the work placement. A further 400+ hours of work placement will follow in year two, again undertaken in a variety of settings. All assessment in the diploma year however is completed by assignment or in the workplace. There are no formal supervised assessments in the diploma.

Additional information

Assessment is split between assignments: work placement competency assessments and the externally-assessed assignment that is completed under supervised conditions. It is important to note that awarding organisation rules state only two attempts can be made with externally-assessed work and should you fail both attempts, you will have failed the entire course. The units all have assignments. On average you can expect one unit to have three assignments, meaning in the certificate you can expect to have to write 21 assignments on a variety of subjects. Please remember, these are level 3 and so will all be graded the same as an A level piece of work. In the workplace you will be expected to perform specific tasks on a regular basis. You will then be observed by our assessors to determine if you are competent/not yet competent. If you are not yet competent, an action plan will be drawn up between the student and assessor with a new date set for a further observed assessment. The final aspect is the supervised controlled assessment. This is when CACHE will set an assignment-style question. You will have one week to write your assignment, only in college under supervised conditions. These are similar to an exam except you are permitted access to the web, text books and your notes. Full details on this will be provided at induction or if you are concerned about it, please contact the programme lead.
