It looks at the development of children from birth to 16 years. It covers a wide range of subjects that will help you to develop skills and qualities to follow a wide range of career pathways. The College also has its own Ofsted Outstanding graded nursery where you may gain experience in planning activities for the children and practising skills in a working nursery.

Course programme

• Selection is by interview. • 5 GCSEs at grade C or above including English and maths or a Level 2 certificate at Merit grade. • Alternative relevant qualifications at Level 2 will be considered. • Students need to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service application (formerly CRB) to attend work placements (Approx. cost £45 to be paid on enrolment). Course Content Units that you will study include: • Child development • Caring for children • Keeping children safe • Play and learning for children • Communication with children • Food and diet • Working with babies • Language and literacy in children. • Work experience - As well as attending college, you will be working two days a week within local nurseries and schools where you will be able to develop your skills and experiences working with children. How will I be assessed? This unit is delivered and assessed through assignments written by the awarding body CACHE. There is an externally marked case study at the end of year one and an externally marked research assignment of 5000 words in year two. You will also be assessed on your practice within the workplace. To be successful on the programme, you must pass the assessments both in College and within the workplace. Progression You may get a job working in a nursery as an early years practitioner or work as a nanny or child minder in the home or at holiday centres in the UK and overseas. You can use this qualification to go to university to study child development or to become a primary school teacher or as a family and youth worker. Fees • If you are aged 16-18 as of 31 August on the year of enrolment – no course fee. • If you are over 19 as of 31 August and enrolling on a full-time programme of study a tuition fee will be applicable in most cases.
