About this course

You must be employed for at least 30 hours per week in a child care setting for children aged up to 5 years, within your chosen industry. If you don’t have an employer then please contact Leicester College’s Apprenticeship Training Agency who may be able to help you or you can search for apprenticeship vacancies online at Your employer/manager will need to agree to you doing the QCF qualification at your workplace. This will be checked at the start of the qualification.

Course programme

Year 1

You will be required to complete 13 mandatory units and on average three optional units depending credit value.
During the first year you will be learning about child development, health, safety, and safeguarding. You will learn to plan activities that will support the development of young children inline with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

You will also be required to complete Functional Skills if you currently do not hold a level 1 in English and maths. Additional support can be provided if necessary.

The apprenticeship comprises of a level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People s Workforce; personal learning and thinking skills; employment responsibilities and rights; Functional Skills level 1 maths; Functional Skills level 1 English; and Functional Skills level 1 ICT.

Year 2

You will look at continue professional development within the childcare sector and discuss the level 3 progression options

In year two you will be finalising your portfolio and completing any remaining assessments and exams.

Additional information

Assessment for the main qualification is undertaken in the workplace and includes assignments, observations and discussion. You should demonstrate competence across various work-based tasks and compile a portfolio of evidence, this will be conducted in the workplace by your assigned assessor and the use of our e-portfolio system. Functional skills will be delivered at College and will include lessons to prepare you for the exams.
