Children's Care, Learning and Development - BTEC First - Diplomas

What are the main features of this course?
This is a one year full time course equivalent to studying for four GCSEs. The course is made up of six units of study.
There are five Core Units:
Understanding Children's Development
Keeping Children Safe
Communication with Children and Adults
Preparing and Maintaining Environments for Child Care
Professional Development, Roles & Responsibilities in Child Care
And one Specialist Unit
Supporting Children's Play and Learning.
One of the requirements of this course is for students to undertake work experience in a child care setting. Work experience is varied across a range of child care settings to provide opportunities for working with children across the age range from six weeks to eight years. The course is delivered using a variety of teaching methods e.g. practical activities, off-site visits, visiting speakers and class-based activities.
Hours of lesson per week: 15 Indicative group size: 20

How is the course assessed?
Students must successfully complete all six assignments at Pass, Merit or Distinction level. There are no formal examinations so continued effort throughout the year is essential.

Who should study this course?
This course is suitable for students who are interested in a career in the childcare sector. Students wishing to enrol on this course will need four GCSE's grades D and E. One of the grade D GCSE's must be English Language. Students, who have achieved an overall Merit grade on a Level 1 course and have Level 1 Communication Key Skills, may also be eligible to enrol on this course. All students will require a positive school report indicating good levels of attendance and commitment, and a proven interest in childcare. Mature students are most welcome and should make contact with the college to arrange an appointment to discuss their qualifications and experience.

Where can I go next?
Where students successfully complete the BTEC First Diploma in Children's Care Learning and Development with achievement of an overall Merit grade and either a GSCE grade C in English or Level 2 Communication Key Skills, progression is possible to the BTEC National Diploma in either Children's Care Learning and Development or Health and Social Care. Students successfully achieving this qualification are also qualified to seek employment in the child care sector.
