About this course

Standard entry to this course requires requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90 attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 4 (C) or above is required.
Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.

Course programme

Year 1

The course covers all aspects of childcare including: equality and diversity, communication, legislation, child development, activities for children and many more. Work experience involves working in different settings for the minimum of 15 hours per week throughout the course, and involves working with all age groups up to five years.
Learners must achieve 23 mandatory units. These are split into different Themes .
Theme 1: Health and well-being
Theme 2: Legislation, frameworks and professional practice
Theme 3: Play, development and learning for school readiness
Theme 4: Professional development
This programme comprises 64 credits. There is also the need to complete work placement hours. These will contribute to a unit where a portfolio of evidence is built and you are assessed on your professional competency. It is important to note that you must be deemed competent to pass the course.

Additional information

Assessment is split between assignments and work placement competency assessments. You will need to evidence in your work that your skills and understanding are sufficient to pass each unit. There are no traditional exams but you will be assessed in placement in a number of pre-arranged and planned visits.
