Our course delves deeply into issues that affect each of us individually, and when we take up our places in a group or as part of society. Successful completion of the AS part will give you the necessary skills and knowledge to be able to progress onto the A2 part of the A level.
An A level in citizenship studies is useful for students wishing to pursue a wide range of careers including higher education, working in law, politics or social work. A Level Citizenship Studies attracts UCAS points for those wishing to enter higher education.
Entry Requirements:
In our experience in order to be successful on this level of programme you will need one of the following:
- four to five* GCSEs at grades A*-C (including English and maths)
- an intermediate GNVQ in a related subject
- a BTEC first diploma in a related subject
- an NVQ level 2/technical certificate in a related subject
- successful completion of an apprenticeship programme
- successful completion of the Gateway/Newstart programme
- equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.
* A level candidates will be expected to have five GCSEs

What does the course involve?:
An A level is an academic qualification and sits at level 3 in the qualifications framework, it comprises of two parts:
- AS (which is completed in year one)
- A2 (which is completed in year two)
Citizenship Studies A Level follows the AQA syllabus, this is an exciting and dynamic specification designed to engage you with present day issues, and to help you develop transferable skills such as planning, negotiating, decision making, evaluating information and constructing arguments. These skills aim to prepare you for the demands of higher education and employment.
A levels are a natural progression route from GCSE and successful completion will provide you with the entry requirements for university. The Advanced GCE in Citizenship will appeal to you if:
- you are interested in learning about your rights and responsibilities as a citizen
- you are interested in how the country is governed
- you are interested in how individual and group action can bring about change.
It is an ideal subject to combine with critical thinking, psychology, geography, law, environmental studies and sociology.

Unit 1 is assessed by a one hour 15 minutes written examination, (40% of AS marks, 20% of total A level marks)
Unit 2 is assessed by a one hour 30 minutes written examination (60% of AS marks, 30% of total A level marks)
