City & Guilds National Certificate in Forestry
This one year, Level 2 course has been designed to meet the need for trained and qualified craft personnel within the forestry industry.

The course has a significant practical input and the content includes:
  • Basic plant and soil science, plant nutrition and protection.
  • Basic engineering principles
  • Records and supervisory studies
  • Forest establishment
  • Forest maintenance
  • Chainsaw operations
  • Harvesting operations
  • Timber processing

Additional skills and qualifications

When your learning agreement is discussed with your tutor early in the first term, you will be advised of extra skills and qualifications which are built into the course programme. These secondary learning goals are selected on the basis of their importance to the industry/career in which you are interested. They will contribute to your employability and will enhance your CV.

Employment and career prospects

The trend within the forestry industry continues to move towards the use of contract labour and the demand for qualified and reliable forest crafts persons remains high.

As the forestry industry develops in response to increased public awareness of environmental issues, the multiple roles of forests and woodlands will become more important and the need for a well-trained industrial workforce will remain high.

Successful students will be able to progress onto higher levels of study, such as National Diploma courses in forestry or related subjects, or seek positions as forest crafts persons, forestry contractors, woodland or forestry workers.

Recommended entry requirements
  • 17 years of age, upwards.
  • Four GCSEs at A to D grades, including English and Mathematics or equivalent.
  • Experience gained from work associated with tree care is beneficial to this course.
  • Due to the demanding nature of the course, entrants must be physically fit.
