Brief Description of the Course:

This course provides a basic introduction to the care of a variety of domestic animals. Areas of study will include feeding, cleaning and handling animals as well as additional modules covering work safety and skills development in the land-based industries. Time will be spent in the classroom and in the College’s purpose built Animal Academy (for Liverpool this will be in the Animal Centre based within the Rare Breeds Farm) developing practical skills. Students must have an interest in the subject and have some prior experience of working with animals. A portfolio of written work must be completed as well as a short on-line assessment.

Entry Criteria:

This course covers practical skills and relevant background knowledge. Students need to be interested in the subject area, with some practical knowledge of small animal care desirable.

Academic qualifications are not essential, but a basic level of maths and English is important.

Assist with Maintaining the Health and Wellbeing of Animals

Assist with the Exercise of Animals

Assist with the Handling and Restraint of Animals

Assist with the Movement, Handling and Accommodation of Animals

Develop Performance in Land-based Industries

Safe and Effective Working Practices in Land-based Industries

Possible Careers / Jobs:

Employment in kennels, catteries, pet shop, grooming parlour, welfare societies eg RSPCA.

Progression:

Students who successfully complete the course could possibly progress onto Level 2 Diploma Animal Care (or onto the Level 2 Certificate in Employability at Liverpool).

Special Requirements Equipment and/or Clothing: Protective apron/Boiler suit, Wellington boots or other sturdy work boots. Tetanus vaccination up to date.
