Information about the courseA beginners course for students wishing to learn about basic interior design techniques.
This 30 hour course, for beginners, enables learners to sample basic techniques of interior design and gain sufficient expertise to plan, produce and evaluate simple designs. There is quite a lot of work involved in this course (including homework), however this course is very rewarding and enjoyable and will give you an excellent insight into interior design and an ideal grounding to advance to the intermediate course.
Course content
You will produce two assessments - room schemes for a Bedroom and a Bathroom which you will display in a portfolio.
During the course you will learn to:
a) Look at the relationship between colours and produce harmonious and contrast colour
schemes on given room outlines
b) Look at a range of materials which can be used for wall surfaces, flooring, furniture and furnishings.
c) Use samples of colours, textures, furnishings and accessories to produce a design board to a brief given by the
tutor.
d) Understand the basic requirements for various types of ceiling and additional lighting.
e) Understand the basic requirements for various services, including electric switches, sockets and appliances. Heating sources, water supply, waste water removal and telecommunications equipment.
f) Use a scale of 1:20 to draw simple plans and elevations for a given room, showing the
furniture layout, lighting, services, furnishings and accessories.
To support your learning you will prepare a workbook which may include samples, sketches,
notes, ideas etc. and a folder of essential notes, including Health & Safety advice relevant to
the subject. The course requires a 90% attendance to pass.

All learners at West Herts College take part in an initial assessment in order for us to help them succeed on their chosen course.
For the first lesson learners need to equip themselves with the following:
Pen, notepad and scissors.
Additional items of equipment will need to be purchased to complete the course. This will be discussed as the course progresses by your course tutor.
Please bring your student ID card and learning agreement.
AssessmentContinuous assessment. Students produce a portfolio of work to be assessed both internally and externally by a City & Guilds External Verifier.
ProgressionAfter successful completion and further advice students can progress onto the alternative Level 1 course (kitchen and living room) or you may be able to progress onto the intermediate course.
