Brief Description of the Course:

(NB. All programmes are based on credit accumulation. Each unit of study is worth either 5 or 10 credits towards the total amount needed to achieve the qualification)

The City and Guilds Level 2 Diploma will provide a detailed introduction to animal care and husbandry combining practical based training with sound theoretical knowledge. The modules, which are listed below, will be delivered using a wide variety of methods including lectures, practical work, demonstrations and self-study. The course provides the flexibility, knowledge, skills and motivation as a basis for future studies and career development within the animal care industry. The course is extremely popular with school leavers who wish to combine a practical based training programme with sound theoretical knowledge.

Entry Criteria:

This course covers practical skills and relevant background knowledge. Students are normally aged 16 or over and the following qualifications are needed:

  • a minimum of 2 GCSEs at Grade D or above to include English Language or equivalent qualifications.
  • complete a minimum of 1 weeks relevant work experience in the Animal Care industry with a satisfactory reference. The work experience does not have to be completed in one block.

¨ Maintain Animal Accommodation

¨ Undertake Practical Animal Feeding

¨ Maintain Animal Health and Welfare

¨ Introduction to the Principles and Practices of Animal Behaviour and Handling

¨ Understand the Basic Principles of Animal Biology

¨ Understand British Wildlife Species and Rehabilitation

Industrial / Work Experience

Students must attend a relevant placement in the animal industry, for example, veterinary practice, boarding kennel, pet retail organisation or canine grooming parlour.

The placement is usually carried out each Friday (not including Liverpool).

Assessments:

A variety of assessment methods will be used these will include assignments and practical work. There are no formal examinations on the Level 2 Diploma.

Possible Careers / Jobs:

Employment in kennels, catteries, pet shop, grooming parlour, welfare societies e.g. RSPCA.

Progression:

Level 2 students can progress to level 3 programmes subject to published entry requirements and satisfactory performance at level 2.
