Day Release: 1 day per week over 2 years, 46 weeks per year. Revision and mock examinations.

Entry Criteria:

5 GCSEs at Grade C or above in English Language, Science, and Mathematics plus 2 others. Certificate Animal Nursing Assistant or equivalent relevant Animal Care Management qualifications as recognised by City & Guilds.

  • 306 - Essentials of practical nursing care for hospitalised animals
  • 307 - Supporting the supply of veterinary medicines
  • 308 - Veterinary nursing support of diagnostic imaging
  • 309 - Veterinary nursing support of laboratory diagnostics
  • 310 - Supporting veterinary operating theatre practice
  • 311 - Understanding the essentials of veterinary nursing care for hospitalised animals
  • 312 - Principles of supporting veterinary anaesthesia
  • 313 - Preparing for professional registration

Small Animal Option Pathway - Units

  • 314 - Principles of peri-operative veterinary nursing support for small animals
  • 315 - Principles of veterinary nursing support for small animal patients
  • 316 - Principles of small animal veterinary nursing emergency and critical care
  • 317 - Practical monitoring of small animal veterinary anaesthesia
  • 318 - Practical peri-operative veterinary nursing support for small animals
  • 319 - Practical veterinary nursing support of small animal patients

This qualification leads to professional registration and a licence to practice. It is a requirement of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Regulatory Bye-laws that such qualifications be subject to independent assessment and examination.

The qualification will accordingly be assessed using a variety of methods:

    • City & Guilds external examinations of knowledge and understanding
    • City & Guilds OSCE examination of essential clinical skills
    • Nursing progress log (NPL)

Independently assessed assignments and examinations.

Industrial / Work Experience:This qualification requires candidates to have access to suitable work experience in clinical veterinary practice for a minimum of 60 weeks. This will be on the basis of paid employment.

1 Specialist Clothing and Equipment: Uniform, Study Diary, Riding Hat and Gloves (if available). Suitable outdoor clothing/ footwear for equine practical sessions.

2 Extra Costs: Enrolment, City & Guilds examination fees. Textbooks - As required.
