Programs of study for the PhD include MS requirements plus advanced engineering courses with coursework as needed in mathematics, operations research, chemistry, biology, geology, physics, materials science, economics, geography, sociology, and political science. (See department guide.)

• Examinations: Comprehensive qualifying examination required for admission to candidacy in all specialty areas. Other examinations may also be required, depending on specialty area.
• Research/Projects: toward dissertation
• PhD Dissertation: based on original, independent research
• Final Evaluations: oral defense of dissertation
