On this course, you will gain a good mix of theoretical, practical, academic, management and industrial-based skills.

Year 1 develops your skills in engineering science, mathematics, computing, engineering drawing (including AutoCAD), fluid mechanics, soil mechanics, structures, materials and sustainable construction and design. There is an emphasis on practical work, including surveying, model-making and computer-aided design packages.

Year 2 comprises practical-focused studies covering specific civil engineering subjects such as hydraulics, geotechnics, structures, construction materials and site surveying. You will also gain a thorough grounding in project and business management. There are two residential field courses, in engineering surveying and geotechnical engineering.

Year 3 broadens your understanding of core civil engineering disciplines (structures, hydraulics and geotechnics) with building and environmental engineering, and includes a field trip devoted to coastal engineering. You will also study the development, design and construction of sustainable infrastructure, focusing on water engineering, transport, highway and the energy sector. You will carry out an individual project and take part in a major group design exercise with fellow students.

About this course

You gain a good mix of theoretical, practical, academic, management and industrial-based skills on this course.
You also have the chance to undertake an industry work placement in your third year.
Our proximity to construction companies, consultants and local authorities makes us ideally situated for site visits, guest lectures and providing real projects.
You have the opportunity to go on up to three residential field trip courses in Sussex, the Lake District and the Isle of Wight.

You will have the opportunity to study a foreign language, free of charge, during your time at the University on a not-for-credit basis as part of the Kingston Language Scheme. Options currently include: Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

This BEng degree is accredited for 2018 entry by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM), which includes the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation and the Institute of Highway Engineers,and helps you progress to become a chartered engineer. The course has an ethos of ‘learning through doing' to ensure you develop the practical skills to succeed in your career. The course puts a focus on practical work in our specialist laboratories - which include concrete, hydraulics, materials, soils, and structures labs - as well as on-site visits and residential field trips examining real-life scenarios. We are currently seeking continuing accreditation for 2019.
