Classics

Introduction
Staff and students of the Department of Classics and Ancient History are engaged in the study of the ancient Greco-Roman world. The department is one of the largest in the country in terms of teaching staff, allowing us to cover many different aspects of antiquity alongside the study of a wide range of literary authors and genres. Ranked among the best in Britain, the department enjoys an international reputation for the high quality of its research. This means you can be assured of high-quality, exciting, up-to-the-minute teaching.

Assessment
You must complete all written work to a satisfactory standard in your first year and pass the examinations in order to enter the second year. The final degree result is partly determined by examinations in the second and third years. You are also assessed on the basis of written work (essays) in your second year, and in the third year by essays, oral seminar presentations and a dissertation.
