Entry onto the Clinical Sciences course, either directly or via a foundation year, allows students a unique and exciting opportunity to study science and health studies, and which can lead to a career in medicine, the healthcare sciences and other healthcare professions.
This collaborative course provides an opportunity for widening participation students entering the foundation year to progress to the MBChB programme at Leeds Medical School
Our focus is to widen participation in medical and healthcare education from students from underrepresented groups.

Year 1

Special Studies 1 (Semester 1 & 2)

This module introduces you to the essential skills required in your future career as a clinical scientist. You will research a selected drug and a specific case study to develop research and evaluation skills, particularly with regard to data generation, retrieval and analysis.

Cardiovascular, Respiratory and Renal Systems (Semester 1 & 2)

This module provides you with knowledge of the structure, function & control of the human cardiovascular, respiratory and renal systems; its contribution to the maintenance of homeostasis; how the system is affected by common diseases & the basic principles of assessment & treatment of common cardiovascular, respiratory and renal disorders.

Nutrition and Energy (Semester 2)

This module provides you with an understanding of digestion, absorption, storage and utilisation of food, the growth, development and structure of the gastro-intestinal tract, and the most common inherited and acquired defects. To promote enquiry into the relationships between diet, lifestyle, ethnicity, health and disease and consider how drugs are eliminated from the body.

Integrated Medical Sciences (Semester 1)

This module will provide an introduction to molecules, cells and tissues which underpin the normal structure and function of the human body. The module also explores genetics and offers a foundation in anatomy and human physiology in relation to disease and disease prevention.

Personal & Professional Development, Society and Health (Semester 1 & 2)

This module allows you to investigate selected topics related to healthcare, to develop your understanding of these areas in a self-directed manner. This also develops your transferable skills, including communication, presentations and scientific writing all of which are useful in a healthcare setting.

Year 2 Core modules:

Genetics and Health (Semester 2)

This module provides you with an understanding of the role of genetics in disease.

Skin, Sensation and Movement (Semester 1)

This module provides you with an introduction to the normal structure and function of the musculoskeletal/locomotor system and to consider the effects and management of some common pathologies and injuries and helps you develop an understanding of the structure and function of skin and the implication of damage in wounds, burns and skin cancer.

Personal, Career and Professional Development (Semester 1 & 2)

This module consolidates your skills in reflective practice and focuses these towards your future career. You will also explore how attitudes, values and beliefs can affect equality of healthcare and treatment and how relevant policies and legislation are used within healthcare.

Special Studies 2 (Semester 1 & 2)

Consolidation of skills in self - evaluation, communication and reflection all of which are essential skills that you will require for lifelong learning in your future career. You will also begin to develop skills in critical analysis that will enable you to make objective assessments of medical and scientific reports as well as gaining a foundation in statistical analysis and epidemiology.

Year 3 Core modules:

Clinical Pharmacology (Semester 1)

This module provides you with an awareness of pharmacokinetics, drug metabolism and transport, drug therapy in special populations and how these processes may vary between ethnic group.

Economics of Healthcare Management (Semester 1 & 2)

This module equips students to understand and challenge management within the NHS through exposure to contemporary management theory and case examples. Students will also critically review concept of health economics as applied in the UK and global healthcare systems, how it impacts on patient treatment and its role in determining quality of life.

Special Studies and Personal & Professional Development (Semester 1 & 2)

CNS Mechanisms, Disorders and Therapeutics (Semester 2)

This module is designed to provide students an in-depth understanding of the central nervous system structural organisation and assess the molecular mechanisms underlying several diseases. Information outlining the knowledge and understanding required in this module is delivered in lectures and workshops are designed to discuss the development of the latest therapeutics targets used in the treatment of diseases, with especial focus on the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.
