Course programme
Following the resounding success of the previous Dean of Chelsea - George Blacklock’s Colour and Abstraction Masterclass, we are delighted to present a third opportunity to work with George as you investigate colour and gesture in abstract art. Beginning on the Friday evening with a visit to one of London’s major art galleries, where you will take on the role of a detective as you examine the narratives behind the paintings. With your enhanced powers of deduction you will waste no time getting started the following day. Beginning with a warm up you will complete a series of exercises relating to colour and gesture. As the day progresses, you will explore a new realm of expressive possibilities by responding to an array of stimuli. The day will culminate in the creation of large scale, collaborative and independent abstract compositions.
Before the course begins you will benefit from reading the first chapter of the Hound of the Baskervilles, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. We have provided some links to the text in the materials list below.
Course Outcomes
If you already have a sustained art practice: you will be able to review how you think; make decisions about colour and gesture in your work; know how to prepare in order to revitalise your making processes and find increasingly inventive solutions to the usual and habitual. If you are looking to begin your abstract art practice: you will begin to explore abstract pictorial space; gain an understanding of the techniques and methods and begin to discover how to maximise your adventurous possibilities.
Who Should Attend
Whether you are a burgeoning artist, or simply interested in pursuing an abstract painting practice. This course is ideal for anyone with an interest in painting ready to take up a playful challenge and explore how colour and gesture in abstract art can be used to advance your own style and approach to painting.
