Common Induction Standards 2010 (Adult Care) - Skills for Care - Online Course

This refreshed course (2010) covers the new eight common induction standards that form the basis of registration of all Social Care staff. The common induction standards describe what all care workers need to understand for their job role in providing care or support to individuals no matter what their needs may be. Induction training is compulsory across the entire social care sector.

The course is suitable for all those entering the Health and Social Care profession, as well as Health & Social Care staff who require induction training. It forms the foundation of all underpinning knowledge required for all social care training and diplomas.

Upon sucessful completion of the assessments within each module, students are able to print a certificate as proof of learning.

Each of the eight standards sets out the required background knowledge, with online activities and a multiple choice test to check understanding.

The eight Common Induction Standards, and the sections covered within the course are:

Role of the health and social care worker - covers:
- Your responsibilities and relationship with the individuals you support
- Following policies and procedures agreed with your employer
- The importance of working in partnership with others
- Handling information correctly

Personal development - covers:
- Competence in your own work role within the sector
- Reflective practice
- Evaluating own performance
- Producing a personal development plan
- Using learning opportunities and reflective practice to contribute to person development

Communicate effectively - covers:
- Importance of effective communication in the work setting
- Meeting he communication and language needs, wishes and preferences of individuals
- Overcoming difficulties in promoting communication
- Understand principles and practices relating to confidentiality

Equality and inclusion - covers:
- The value and the importance of equality and inclusion
- Providing inclusive support
- Access information, advice and support about equality and inclusion

Principles for implementing duty of care - covers:
- Understand how duty of care contributes to safe practice
- Know how to address dilemmas that may arise between and individual’s rights and the duty of care
- Know how to recognise and handle comments and complaints
- Know how to recognise and handle adverse events, incidents, errors and near misses

Principles of safeguarding in health and social care - covers:
- Recognising signs of harm or abuse
- Ways to reduce likelihood of abuse
- Responding to suspected or disclosed abuse
- National and local context of protection from harm and abuse

Person-centred support - covers:
- Promote person-centred values in everyday work
- Working in a person-centred way
- Recognising possible signs of dementia
- Supporting active participation
- Supporting an individual’s rights to make choices

Health and safety in an adult social care setting - covers:
- Roles and responsibilities relating to health and safety in the work setting
- Health and safety risk assessment
- Moving and positioning
- Responding to accidents and sudden illness
- Policies and procedures regarding medication and health care tasks
- Handling hazardous substances
- Preventing the spread of infection
- Promoting fire safety in the work setting
- Security measures in the work setting
- Managing stress
- Food safety and nutrition

Please Note: All assessments within this course must be taken within 12 weeks of the start date. After 12 weeks, the tests will time out. However, students will still be able to access the rest of the course for reference material for the remainder of the 12 month licence duration.
