Course programme

If you’re a registered nurse and don’t hold a specialist practitioner qualification, this course will prepare you to prescribe safely, appropriately and cost-effectively from the Nurse Prescribers' Formulary (NPF) for Community Practitioners.

This course qualifies registered nurses without a specialist practice qualification to prescribe safely, appropriately and cost-effectively from the Nurse Prescribers' Formulary for Community Practitioners. It enables inter-professional students to debate, analyse and synthesise key issues within safe prescribing practice and its contribution to healthcare.

You may be interested in this course because:

  • you want to extend your skills in patient care and improve patient access to medicines
  • you want to enhance your professional skills with an approved qualification
  • you want to develop your practice and enhance your career

On successful completion of this programme, you’ll be qualified to prescribe from the Nurse Prescribers’ Formulary within your scope of competence. You’ll learn to prescribe safely, appropriately and cost-effectively, as a Community Practitioner Nurse Prescriber and your qualification will be recorded on the Nursing and Midwifery professional register.

Assessment

You will submit a 1,500-word assignment, based on a detailed case study, and you’ll sit a 1.5-hour exam. Your employer will also need to assess you as competent at history-taking, assessment and diagnosis; or, if you are not yet competent in these areas, you should at the same time take a course which will enable you to meet this requirement.
