About this course


A keen interest in Complementary Therapies is essential, as well as an understanding of Anatomy and Physiology and a good standard of education. It is highly recommended that candidates should have achieved a minimum of 5 GCSEs (grades A*-E), including English and maths, or satisfactory results in a relevant Level 2 qualification, and an interview. However exceptions may be made to adult returnees with experience in the workplace.

Course programme



This level 3 Diploma is for students who want to practice as a level 3 therapist in the Complementary Therapy sector. Candidates will gain an understanding of Body Massage, Aromatherapy and Reflexology, as well as business practice, anatomy, physiology and pathology and integrate health and safety into all treatments. The candidate will study the theory of all treatments and complete a reflective journal for all practical case studies.

Course Content

The course will be delivered through a variety of learning experiences, including practical case studies and full treatments conducted in a realistic working environment. Guided assignment work, lectures, group discussion, and tasks and individual study. In addition to your main programme, you will study English and maths. Depending on your grades on entry, you will study either Functional Skills or GCSEs English and Maths. At least 8-10 hours per week of additional home study and revision is recommended.


Level 3 Complementary Therapies techniques units may include:

Unit 301: Principles and Practice of Complementary Therapies

Unit 302: Business Practice for Complementary Therapies

Unit 303: Knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology for Complementary Therapies

Unit 304: Provide Body,Massage Therapy for Complementary Therapies

Unit 305: Provide Aromatherapy for Complementary Therapies

Unit 306: Provide Reflexology,for Complementary Therapies

Your group may be made up of male and female students. Learners will be required to practice on classroom peers without prejudice. While completing practical assessment, candidates will be observed and assessed for communication skills and professional conduct as well as practical techniques in all areas throughout the treatment.


You will be provided with external models where possible, but will be required to find your own models (for your case studies) – these can be peers, family and friends. A charge will be made for all clients who attend our open salon sessions for treatment.


Due to awarding body requirements, learners will be expected to:


Remove all visible jewellery including facial and body piercing during practical sessions.

Wear professional uniform and shoes for practical sessions (shoes should be flat and closed in)

Nails must be short without nail polish or extensions

Good standard of personal presentation and the ability to work with others.

You may need to provide models for all practical assessments.

The candidates will complete on-line exams, written assessments and exams and complete Body massage Aromatherapy practical case study treatments – of which 20% are other forms of aromatherapy such as blends and compresses etc, and Reflexology practical case study treatments on clients (part of your reflective practice), which will be carried out in your own time, and in addition will complete final practical GRADED assessments in Body Massage, Aromatherapy and Reflexology.


All final assessments will be graded pass, merit or distinction. Practical skills will be assessed on clients in the salons in the college. All clients who have treatments at the college will incur a treatment charge.

All assessments, both written and practically are internally and externally verified, in accordance with City and Guilds awarding body requirements.

In particular students who have achieved Level 2 and/or Level 3 in Beauty Therapy or Hairdressing will be considered, subject to successful board of studies decision and reference.



Career Opportunities

Many career paths will be opened through this course including work in salons, leisure centres, spas and health farms. This award qualifies candidates to operate their own clinic or home visiting practice. It also forms the basis of the first steps in becoming an independent Complementary Practitioner.


Current students participate in voluntary work at Colchester NHS Hospital, working on the wards alongside Healthcare Practitioners and Ward sisters offering Complementary Therapies to patients and attending Health Care wellbeing events, which provides valuable work experience.



Career Opportunities

On completion of the course you will receive an award in Level 3 Diploma in Complementary Therapies (City and Guilds).


Successful students could progress onto a Foundation Degree in Complementary Therapies.
