Compressors: The Essentials

In this tutorial, audio engineer Jeff Dykhouse addresses the advantages and disadvantages of both hardware and software compressors. Compression is a process that manipulates the dynamic range of an audio signal to achieve more uniform and consistent sound by altering perceived volume.

By understanding their use and how to manage compressors your vocals will stand out from the surrounding instrumentation, your drums and percussion will appear to have a more sustain sound and give guitars a fuller sound.

Since the type and amount of compression is dependent on the type of audio signal being processed, Jeff outlines how the various compressor controls affect the audio signal manipulation that is required. You will see and hear the how different compressors affect various instruments and how to apply it to your music creation.
