Why choose this course? Please note this course is only available for 2017 entry. How often do you use computers in your normal daily routine? Are you intrigued by the way you interact with computers, which exist in many different forms?   On this course you will look at Computer Science which is at the core of the underlying technologies which support this infiltration of computing in every element of our society. The demand for graduates with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to analyse, design, develop, test and maintain modern computer systems is high. Organisations rely on the use of computers for information processing and problem solving so the industry requires specialists to create, understand and further advance computer science.   This course has been designed to develop your practical and applied skills and to support you in gaining the experience needed to apply these skills effectively.   As well as gaining and developing a wide range of computer science knowledge and skills, you will have the opportunity of working on a live work based project/placement during your second year which will allow you to apply your academic knowledge and interpersonal skills in a real-world environment.   The course benefits from a range of computer labs. This includes two general-purpose suites, containing a range of software for computer programming, artificial intelligence, databases, simulation, project management, and digital media. Major packages available include the Adobe Creative Suite. Within the computing department a further two specialist labs exist; one of which is dedicated to computer games development and the other is a computer networking facility, which includes an accredited CISCO Academy. We also have access to the HPC Wales facilities.

  • Students undertake an individual project in the third year of their course. Normally each year, there are a number of ‘live’ projects available that involve working with businesses.

Year 1 (Level 4)

Your first year contains essential fundamental material which is relevant in all of our computing programmes. You will learn both subject specific skills along with transferable skills which will increase your employability prospects.

With the support of your tutors, you will learn about some of the essential facts, concepts, principles and theories relating to computing and computer applications. You will be able to demonstrate skills that underpin good practice in the field of computers and computational methods, e.g. laboratory tasks involving the creation of simple programs and the use of operating systems. This will help develop your understanding of hardware issues, including interfacing and data communications, and their impact on the overall design and performance of computer based systems.

Year 2 (Level 5)

Your second year continues teaching you the fundamentals of the discipline, and more specialist modules start to be introduced. You will also undertake a group project where you will gain important skills in project management techniques and the professional and ethical issues of project management. You will also deepen your knowledge and understanding of computing concepts and approaches for complex problems through the application of several existing artificial intelligence techniques for learning and optimisation targeting at real-world problems.

Year 3 (Level 5)

In your third year, you will further develop your skills through taught modules and research, with a focus on the latest developments in your chosen discipline. You will also undertake an individual final year project, which will help prepare you for the kind of tasks and situations you may encounter in the workplace. The practical and project work will further develop your analytical skills through the analysis and appraisal of current and emerging technologies, taking into account its impact on society.

Year 4 (Level 6)

MComp Computer Science is both academic and industry facing and is intended for you to extend your study to the master’s level in your chosen area of expertise. Modules studied on the programme have been designed to provide the skills to meet industrial and commercial needs as well as those of traditional academic standing. In addition to the academic and theoretical aspects the emphasis will be on the practical side to enable you to practice as computing and IT professionals or continue with further study towards a doctorate.
