About this course

You should have manual bookkeeping skills at Level 2 (or relevant experience in an accounting/bookkeeping environment)which will be assessed at an informal interview. Additionally students MUST be computer literate and be familiar with using the Windows environment.

Introduction:
Most organisations have specialised computer accounting systems which use spreadsheets, databases and specialist software packages. This City & Guilds course uses SAGE software to provide the necessary skills to operate a computerised accounting programme.

Study Mode & Location:
This 17 week course will last for 3 hours per week. It will be held at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, St Vincent`s Road, Preston, PR2 8UR.

Course Content:
The course concentrates on teaching the concepts of computerised bookkeeping/accounting using SAGE software, with the emphasis on:

  • Sales, Purchases & Nominal Ledgers.
  • Audit Trails & Trail Balance.
  • Profit & Loss Accounts and Balance Sheets.
  • VAT Returns & Bank Reconciliation.
  • End of Year Procedures.
  • Report selection and printing.
  • Bank econciliation.


The course will be undertaken in a formal but relaxed classroom environment in one of the Information Technology computer rooms. It is delivered using a combination of lectures, short talks, demonstrations and examples. You will complete a series of exercises throughout the course, all of which are designed to raise your competence and skill levels using computer software.

It is strongly recommended that students have access to a computer and the relevant software outside College, in order to practice. Although, for students who do not have access to a computer, time can be allocated in the Information Technology Learning Centre.

Assessment:
Assessment consists of two practical assessments/coursework and a comprehensive portfolio showing progress throughout the course.

Careers & Progression Opportunities:
Successful completion of this course allows progression to additional units at Level 2, AAT Level Accounting, Business Studies or Marketing.

You will need to have an informal interview with a Adult Admissions Adviser.
Many courses have limited places so please enquire as soon as possible. Following interview, the earliest you may enrol is mid-June.
