About this course

For standard entry, applicants should have a good honours degree or equivalent qualifications, or a postgraduate qualification, in a computer science related subject area. Example subjects may be first awards in Computing and Computer Science/Studies.

For mature applicants with non-standard academic profiles, entry and exemption on the basis of Accreditation by Prior Learning, certificated or experiential (APL/APEL) is available.

As a student on the course you will study a variety of units covering aspects of project management, information systems strategy, emerging technologies, finance, marketing, entrepreneurship and managing people.

Computing and Technology are key areas in which early adopters can see great opportunities for enterprise and entrepreneurship. Business start-ups were at their highest levels for 20 years in 2007.

A record 471,500 new business started up in 2007 – the highest annual volume since Barclays started tracking the market in 1988. The figures show an increase of 17% on the figures first recorded in 1988 (403,200), and an increase of 3% on 2006 (457,200)

The Guardian reported on the 19th May 2008 that “Britain needs to act urgently to prevent an acute shortage in strategic sectors of the economy.

John Denham, the secretary of state for innovation, universities and skills warns today. He is to hold talks with employers next month to discuss how government and industry can prevent major skills gaps in finance, construction, science, engineering and IT between now and 2014.

Britain needs to train nearly 2 million workers in these strategic industries to remain competitive in a global marketplace.

Teaching/learning methods and strategies

This course uses a variety of teaching methods, including seminars, lectures, practical sessions and independent learning which will make use of BREO Virtual Learning Environment.

Each unit that you take will have a series of lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical sessions, and you will typically have 12-14 hours of direct contact time with academic staff.
