In music, direction is the practice with which a group of musicians is coordinated by a professional figure in the performance of a composition. This function is assumed by the conductor, also called orchestra director when he relates to an orchestra, choir director or choir master with a choir and band director with a band. The conductor has first of all an interpretative role, that is, he makes the fundamental musical choices (trend, tempo, dynamics) illustrating to solo singers, choristers and instrumentalists his own general approach to the musical composition to be performed. In addition, he has a concertation function, and aids in the coordination of the musicians during rehearsals and performances, indicating the tempo and the inputs of the voices. The direction of orchestra has its historical roots in the eighteenth century, even if, in its autonomous dimension, it is part of a tradition that is already present at the beginning of the nineteenth century, evolving, over the course of the century, to cover a central role in the field of interpretation musical.
