About this course

A good understanding of IT systems with either relevant work experience or a level 2 qualification such as the CompTIA A+ or Cisco IT Essentials. Other certification such as CompTIA Network+, Security+ or a keen interest in pursuing a career in networking. However, no skill or knowledge in this area is assumed but basic numeracy is expected and you should be confident in the use of a computer to access the resources that will be available.

Year 1

This course is suitable for those who wish to understand the principles of computer networks whilst developing good practice and skills. The course will provide you with an opportunity to practise configuring computer networks. Some of the topics you will cover include: hierarchical network design, connecting to the WAN, point-to-point connections, frame and relay, NAT Network Address Translation for IPv4, broadband, securing connectivity, monitoring the network
and troubleshooting.

Additional information

Assessment is by an online end of course exam set by the Cisco Academy. You will receive the CCNA R S 1 component assessment certificate. Each session is a comprehensive mix of instructor led tuition, hands on practical labs in the classroom and access to the online curriculum and assessment. The session starts with a presentation and then you have the opportunity to use the live or simulated lab equipment to practice curriculum content. Practical work is a major part of the course and requires regular attendance and practice. If you have a disability the study materials are available online. However, some components may not be fully accessible using a screen reader. If you have a disability you may be allowed additional time to complete the examination.
