This course is for you if you want tangible academic rewards for some challenging study. The HND in Construction is for you if you wish to develop your higher level skills within the construction and built environment sector and progress to a higher technician and professional level in Building or Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Project Management, Architectural Technology, Building Engineering or Facilities Management.

The course is designed as a one year top-up to HNC diploma. Ideally, you should be employed either part- or full-time in a construction-related job, i.e trainee manager, surveyor, engineer etc. Self-employed applicants must be able to prove that you are in regular construction employment.

This course is ideal for construction personnel that gained their HNC diploma some years ago and wish to progress further at higher education. It will enable you to gain confidence in studying again and progress towards an honours degree and chartered status.

You will be studying on a part-time basis for one full day per week. On this course you will complete six units of study delivered over the year, which, in addition to the ten units studied at HNC will provide the required sixteen units needed for the Level 5 HND in Construction. Success at HND will to enable progression onto our Level 6 BSc (Hons) Degree in Construction Management.

On completion of this course you will have three options:

use the qualification only to gain better career prospects, such as promotion;
progress further at higher education level and enroll onto our BSc (Hons) Degree in Construction Management or alternatively;
progress onto university on a part- or full-time BSc (Hons) or BA(Hons) degree course.


You must have a good standard of education and have passed the level 4 HNC Diploma in Construction;
GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4 (C) or above or equivalent Level 2 qualifications.

Course programme

You will extend your knowledge in the following Specialist units:

  • Unit 8 Technology for Complex Buildings;
  • Unit 17 Project Management;
  • Unit 12 Conversion and Adaptation of Buildings;
  • Unit 19 Building Control Procedures and Legislation;
  • Unit 25 Design Technology;

    and the compulsory Unit 3 Applied Mathematics.

Course Assessment Method

All units are assessed on a continuous basis by means of written and some practical assignments to meet set standard criteria. Some units are partially assessed by individual examination. Final grades for each individual unit are awarded either: Pass, Merit or Distinction. On completion of the minimum eight units (including four core units) your HND will be graded also as either: Pass, Merit or Distinction. An external verifier from Edexcel visits the college annually and a sample of your work is verified for quality and accuracy of marking.
