Course programme

Year 1

There are four mandatory units, which cover the following aspects of construction:
● construction principles
● construction design
● health and safety in construction
● construction technology.
The mandatory units will introduce students to personal responsibilities for health, safety and welfare, the industry and legislative requirements for health and safety, and the application of organisational processes and risk management to ensure compliance. We will then choose three optional units focusing on their areas of preferred specialism. These units have been designed to support students’ progression to a range of employment opportunities in the construction sector and will allow them a choice of covering principles across one or more of the following disciplines.

Additional information

There are three main forms of assessment that you need to be aware of: external, internal and synoptic. The external assessment is taken under specified conditions, then marked by Pearson and a grade awarded. Students must achieve all external units at pass grade or above. Students are permitted to resit any external assessment only once during their programme. The mandatory synoptic unit requires learners to apply learning from across the qualification to the completion of a defined vocational task. For Unit 2: construction design students complete a task to demonstrate the application of skills involved in the design and construction of low- and medium rise buildings and structures, evaluating the effectiveness of a design solution against client requirements and external constraints. This draws together underpinning knowledge of how to go through clear design processes, along with practical knowledge of how to use different manual and computer-aided methods. Most units in the sector are internally assessed and subject to external standards verification. The mandatory external exams are: Unit 1: Construction Principles • Written exam. • 1 hour 30 minutes. • Written submission. • 75 marks. Assessment May/June Unit 2: Construction Design • A task set and marked by Pearson and completed under supervised conditions. • Before the supervised assessment, learners will be given information to research in approximately three hours in a two-week period timetabled by Pearson. • The supervised assessment is 12 hours in a two-week period timetabled by Pearson. • Written submission of evidence. • 63 marks Assessment May/June
