MA Contemporary Christian Theology

Course length:
2-3 years part-time

Why study Contemporary Christian Theology?
Newman’s MA in Contemporary Christian Theology enables students with a serious interest in theology to engage with some of the major theological and philosophical issues facing the world today.

Students on the programme have the choice of focusing their MA on one of three aspects of theology: Christian Theology, Christian Theology and Education, or Christian Theology and Ministry. All students will take the same modules and will attend core lectures but, where appropriate, seminars and tutorials will focus on one of the following areas:

Christian Theology
Students pursuing their studies in Christian Theology will have the opportunity to engage in considerable depth with contemporary movements in philosophical and systematic theology. The course will allow for detailed study of key texts and ideas, while addressing questions about the possibility and nature of theology in the post-modern world.

Theology and Education
Students with a particular interest in Christian education, for example head teachers, teachers or foundation governors, will be able to equip themselves for work in Church schools, as the assignments will allow them to address specific issues in the areas of Church school ethos, Christian leadership and Religious Education.

Theology and Ministry
The Christian ministry strand will enable students to explore and extend their understanding of how current research in theology can enrich the work of Christian ministry and mission. This focus will enable students to develop the cognitive, imaginative and critical skills required to interpret texts and doctrines in post-Christian contexts and will enhance their competence as clerical and lay Christians in applying the resources of faith to everyday life.

Participation in this course can help advance a career in teaching RE, or development in pastoral ministry and adult education.
