This MSc is a pioneering degree; it is the first interdisciplinary post-graduate degree to take contemporary India as its focus. It examines India as an emerging global power and seeks to understand both India’s achievements and its persistent problems. It probes the connections between the country’s democratic and developmental successes and failures.You will receive research methods training to start you off on a sound basis for your own research and so that you better understand what lies behind much of what you read.

You will be offered a free choice of topic for your 10,000-word dissertation and will receive expert supervision from the core staff. You will be assessed through a combination of coursework and end-of-year written examinations.

Modules include:
Each module will involve weekly lectures combined with seminars or classes. The modules run in Michaelmas and Hilary terms. Trinity term is dedicated to the preparation of coursework and exams.
A range of India-related seminars take place at the University in term-time. The Contemporary South Asia Seminar held at the Department of International Development is a compulsory part of the course. Another seminar series which may be of special interest to you is the seminar in South Asian history held at St Antony's College.
