Our MA Contemporary Jewellery course celebrates the contribution of individual artists and designer-makers. It enables you to extend the boundaries of your practice by examining cutting edge ideas in jewellery which you've not been exposed to before.
As a student on this course, you'll be free to explore a variety of materials and to experiment with scale, form, ornament and body adornment in our dedicated facilities.
About this course
Our course is responsive to a wide range of topics and creative disciplines, including fine art, fashion, design and photography. It's designed to encourage you to explore the relationship between jewellery and other related disciplines.
Conceived as a breeding ground for experimentation and innovation, this MA is an excellent opportunity for you to develop cutting edge work and develop your individual style.
Working alongside creative practitioners from a variety of different design backgrounds, you'll receive specialist tuition through a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials. You'll be expected to present your work-in-progress regularly at formal reviews.
Emphasis will be placed on your personal development through the production of your individual jewellery project.

Course stages-
Theory and Analysis
This focuses on challenging and reflecting upon your practice. You'll achieve this through the development of critical reading, observation, handling and thinking deeply about products, craft artifacts and contextual research associated with your work and its field of enquiry.

Exploratory Practice
Focuses on developing your practice into a form of enquiry; a questioning, analytical and interrogative approach to your work that will enable you to become a reflective practitioner.
During stage two you begin developing your MA project, evaluating and testing out the aims of your proposal over a sustained period of self-directed study.

Course stages-
Reflective Practice
This is one of the most important concepts for a creative practitioner. Reflective practice enables you to become critically aware and allows you to develop and progress your practice independently. The work undertaken in this unit should begin to address the research questions you explored in the Exploratory Practice unit. Work completed for this unit should be considerably more resolved and establish a clear line of enquiry through selected materials, concepts and a clearly articulated context. You'll also have the opportunity to complete a period of professional practice during this unit.
In the third stage of the course, you'll apply the knowledge gained through your research to create a final body of work.

Major Project
The Major Project is the culmination of the Masters programme. It is an exposition of individual practice enquiry sustained over an extended period of autonomous, self-initiated research and development. It is articulated through a body of work that is fully resolved within its own critical framework and reflects advanced conceptual, theoretical and technical subject knowledge.
