The MA in the Philosophy of Nature, Information and Technology explores the world as a world of communication. It brings together philosophy, the sciences, information theory, and technology studies to explore ideas and challenges facing us today and tomorrow.

Our research-driven course pays particular attention to new materialisms, feminist epistemologies, cyborg philosophy, process philosophy and to a range of contemporary and historical figures whose work brings insight into the world of today and the challenges posed by the age of technology and information. What’s more, with our course, you’ll have the chance to demonstrate your knowledge, and to develop perspectives on problems that demand our attention today, such as our relation the nature, and what we are becoming as human beings through our multiple connections with technology.

This course will build on your previous studies in philosophy – or in environmental studies, technology studies, and other related areas. It will be suitable for you whether you are studying just for the sake of interest, or as preparation for a PhD programme. You will be taught by internationally recognised scholars in the field, including David Webb and Patrick O'Connor.

The degree runs by distance learning. Because it is online, you will find the fees very competitive, and of course you will save money also on travel. We provide a suite of internet-based resources for you to use (lectures, notes, questions to work on, readings, and millions of digitised pages from the Staffordshire University library), a discussion forum for you to exchange and debate ideas with your teachers and fellow students, virtual visiting speakers from around the world, and a team of leading academics to support you throughout your study.

About this course

The MA is for anyone who has previously studied philosophy and would like to deepen their understanding of recent and contemporary philosophical ideas, and for anyone with an interest in how new thinking about materialism and information is changing the way we engage with nature, and the way we understand ourselves and our relations with each other.

. It can serve as a stepping stone to postgraduate research. But the course is also suitable for anyone with a passion for philosophy and for 'big questions' about the self, freedom, time, and other topics.

The MA can be taken either full-time (11 months) or part-time (22 months).

Professor of Philosophy, Course Leader

https://www.staffs.ac.uk/people/david-webb My research is centered on recent and contemporary European philosophy, and I have a particular interest in French epistemology and philosophy of science. I am currently drawing on the work of Michel Serres to examine the relation between knowledge, ethics, and politics, with particular reference to governance at times of crisis. I am also interested in readings of Foucault’s conception of critique as a rational practice.
