This programme draws on our long-established strengths in research and teaching in Continental Philosophy. It is distinctive in offering an unusually broad range of module options specifically in this area of philosophy, covering major figures and themes, as well as more specialised or less mainstream topics. Because of the breadth of our expertise in this area, whichever module option you choose, you will be taught by world leaders in their respective fields.

This MA gives you a high degree of flexibility over the modules you can select. We offer a broad selection of taught modules in 19th and 20th century Continental Philosophy, as well as in other areas of philosophy.Unlike many other postgraduate programmes, you choose your coursework and dissertation proposal without any further restriction on your selection of philosophy module options other than the requirement to take at least 40 CATS worth of options from the field of Continental Philosophy. You may decide to study for the MA as a self-standing degree, or as an entry route into PhD research (including the option for 1+3 study). Teaching is led by nine academics in our Department, who can support you to frame a proposal for further doctoral study if you achieve good results on the course.

Course programme

Due to the flexibility of this programme, there are no set core modules, but students will be required to take 40 CATS (2 modules) from a list of optional core modules.

Optional Modules:

This programme has optional modules to choose from to allow you to achieve the required credits to successfully complete the award; in addition to your selected core modules, you’ll have the freedom to select 4 modules (80 CATS) that appeal to you from our extensive range of optional modules. At a research led institution, optional module lists are subject to change each year to keep the student learning experience current and up-to-date. For the optional modules available in this department please visit the department website.

Teaching:

On this course you will follow a programme of taught modules making up 120 CATS (academic credits), followed by a 10,000 word dissertation worth 60 CATS. Our modules are generally 20 CATS, so you will cover 6 modules - although your exact pathway will depend on your selection of core and optional modules. We offer a wide range of optional modules reflecting the great breadth of research areas we have in our department, so you will be able to tailor your course to your interests and aspirations. You will have a personal tutor who will be able to advise you on your academic progress as well as discuss aspects such as which modules are best for you.

Assessment:

Full-time students will undertake taught modules and submit assessed essays for these during the academic terms. You will also begin planning your dissertation and generally you will undertake your supervision sessions for this with your agreed supervisor during the summer term. As long as you pass your taught components, you will then focus on completion of your MA dissertation in the summer months of July and August.
