About this course
Recent theoretical and experimental advances mean that we are now able to exert an extraordinary degree of control over individual quantum systems and to prepare and manipulate groups of interacting quantum systems deterministically. Bringing these techniques to bear upon both fundamental physics and a new swathe of technologies dependent on strange quantum phenomena defines the emerging field of controlled quantum dynamics. The Department of Physics is leading an interdisciplinary Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) on Controlled Quantum Dynamics offering a four-year PhD, the first year of which leads to an MRes. Self-funded students may take the MRes by itself as a 12-month full-time course. A feature of the course is its focus on both theory and experiment, equipping you to enter either avenue of research. Experimental realisations covered include cold trapped ions and neutral atoms, photonic and superconducting qubits. The focus is on their multi-particle coherence and entanglement properties and upon methods for their preparation, control and read-out. This knowledge is crucial to a broad range of modern technologies and fundamental research (for instance, in quantum information processing) through to industrial applications, such as communication and extremely high precision space and time measurements.
All applicants must apply online. You can usually apply for up to two courses, although your second choice will only be considered if your first-choice application is unsuccessful. Most courses don't have a formal closing date, but popular courses close when they are full, so you should apply early to avoid disappointment. There may also be funding deadlines that apply to you. You will need to upload documents with your applications, which may include...

Course programme
Modules shown are for the current academic year, and are subject to change depending on your year of entry.
The teaching of the MRes comprises eight core and several optional modules, after which there is a six-month research project.
The teaching involves a mix of lectures, directed reading, problem classes, computational exercises laboratory work and seminars.
Assessment of the taught courses is by a combination of coursework and written examinations, and the research project is assessed through an oral presentation and a thesis.
Modules Core modules- Quantum Optics
- Quantum Information
- Tools for Controlled Quantum Dynamics (CQD)
- Light Matter Interactions
- Quantum Physics and Chemistry of Cold Matter
- Advanced Quantum Information
- Experimental Realisations of Controlled Quantum Dynamics
- Group laboratory projects
You may choose your optional modules from either the MSc courses in MSc Quantum Fields and Fundamental Forces and MSc Optics and Photonics, or from a range of final year undergraduate courses.
FundingFully funded four-year studentships are available for UK and EU students ordinarily resident in the UK for at least three years prior to the start of the grant. This funding is for students intending to stay on for the four-year PhD only.
