The postillion is the one who drove the horses of the stagecoaches and post carriages mounting the one on the left; by extension, the coachman of noble carriages who drove riding the left horse of the pair. Since the postillion usually mounted the horse on the left of the draft, the word also passed to indicate the servant who rode the horse on the left in the elegant carriages. This term can also indicate the device which, under the action of the wind, can slide along a cable and carry objects (for example, from the coast to a ship and vice versa); it consists of a light armor and a veil integral with it, all designed in such a way as to make sliding possible. Typically the postillions drove the postal stagecoaches, as well as the private carriages that traveled "for the post" or " but which were fixed to the horse's hips and which constituted a protection in case of fall of the animal. In fact, the boots were stiff enough to carry the weight of the horse.
