The vespillone in ancient Rome was the one in charge of transporting and burying or cremating corpses, especially those of low-ranking people. This figure is also known as a necrophorus or more popularly gravedigger. Due to his work in contact with corpses, in some cultures it is believed, by superstition, that the gravedigger brings bad luck. Due to its dismal connotations, the character of the gravedigger is also at the center of the interest of those songs, between the goliardic and the grotesque, which exorcise death by describing improbable events set in cemeteries with complacent insistence. In the famous cinema he is the gravedigger of For a Fistful of Dollars who operates in the town of San Miguel, played by Joseph Egger. In the world of wrestling, a famous champion of this sport is known by the ring name of The Undertaker ("The Digger"), with evident allusion to an extreme danger of him. In the Kuroshitsuji manga, one of the characters is known only by the English name of his profession, which is "Undertaker".
