The costume designer is the person who designs the stage clothes for a show or a film, choosing the style, fabrics and colors, after agreement with the director and the set designer. The costume designer oversees the making of the costumes by the tailors. He often outlines sketches that are then made by the tailor's shop and his work is often assisted by the costume designer, who deals with the strictly logistical and technical aspects of the profession. In cinematographic productions the costume designer is often, but not necessarily, the one on whom the make-up artist also depends, with whom he establishes a relationship aimed at outlining which style of body masking the make-up artist should use to complete the costume designer's idea of the character. Theatrical costumes are clothes, specially created for the stage, which are worn by the actors in a performance. Costume is of great importance in the history of the theater and its evolution is closely intertwined with that of the theater itself. A costume is the distinctive style of dressing of an individual or group, reflecting social class, gender, profession, ethnicity, nationality, activity or era. National or regional costume expresses the identity of the place and emphasizes the unique characteristics of a culture. It is often a source of national pride. [5] Some examples include the Scottish kilt and the Japanese kimono. The term costume often refers to a particular style of clothing worn to portray the wearer as a character in a social or theatrical event, in a film or on television. Combined with other aspects of scenography, theatrical costumes can help actors interpret characters and their context, as well as communicate information about the period, geographical and historical location and time of day, season or time of the performance. Some stylized theatrical costumes, such as those of Arlecchino and Pantalone, from the Italian commedia dell'arte, exaggerate one aspect of a character.
