How is the course structured?

The Counselling Skills course is divided into six comprehensive modules.

Module 1: Introduction to counselling

1.1 Introduce the basic concept of counselling.
1.2 Discuss the role of the counsellor in the counselling environment.
1.3 Identify the role of active listening in the counselling environment and the skills that are involved with it.

Module 2: Basic Interview Skills

2.1 Discuss the tasks required of the counsellor in an interview situation and their importance in the first interview.
2.2 Identify the skills which are essential to establishing the counsellor/client relationship and explain how these qualities may be developed.
2.3 Introduce the concept of non-directive counselling.

Module 3: The Counselling Relationship

3.1 Introduce the importance of empathy and its importance for building relationships.
3.2 Explain what is meant by trial and error
3.3 Identify useful motivational skills.
3.4 Describe the factors that make the best counsellors.

Module 4: Motivational skills

4.1 Identify the role of the counsellor in understanding the client’s motivational levels.
4.2 Introduce the questions a counsellor can use to explicit self motivating statements from the client
4.3 Analyse the counsellors’ roadblocks to communication.

Module 5: Grief and Bereavement

5.1 Analyse grief and bereavement listing the different forms/reactions to grief.
5.2 Discuss the person’s feeling in the time of grief in either normal or violent circumstances.
5.3 Discuss the importance of how grief and the grieving person should be managed.

Module 6: Stress, Anxiety and Depression

6.1 Discuss the two categories that stress symptoms may be divided into.
6.2 Explain the issues of depression as well as what symptoms may manifest from the illness.
6.3 Identify how negative thinking may be turned into positivity leading onto restoring self-esteem of the depressed client.

Course Assessments

The Level 2 Child Development courseis marked through a process of continuous assessment guided by your tutor following NCFE guidelines. This means that your qualification will be awarded according to your performance on assessments rather than by taking an exam.

We send the full course out with the units listed above, you then read through the course in your own time and complete the assignments which you send to your tutor for marking. There is no word count for these assignments. However, one sentence answers will be rejected and you will have to re-submit it for marking.

Upon verification of the activities, exercises and assignments, a certificate of achievement will be awarded by the national awarding organisation NCFE, as confirmation that your written work has met all of the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the programme.

Course Duration

We recommend you spend approximately 110 hours of your time studying for the Counselling Skills course. The pace of study is completely up to you. To give an example, if you dedicate 2 hours a week to the course it would take you a year to complete but if you could spare 4 hours a week you could complete it in six months.
