The title of chancellor is used in various jurisdictions to depict an official with different attributions. The office to which the Registrar is in charge is called the Registrar. In the Roman Empire the ushers placed at the cancellus, the barrier that separated the judge in audience from the public, were called chancellors (Latin: cancellarii, sing. Cancellarius). The title then spread to countries directly or indirectly influenced by Latin culture, however, assuming very different meanings according to eras, places and contexts. In the Middle Ages and in the following era, the chancellor was the official who was entrusted with the custody of the official seal of a sovereign, lord, bishop, municipality or other institution and took care of the drafting and issuing of official documents. Notaries (Latin: notarii, sing. notarius), who dealt with the verification and dating of official documents, and the scribes (Latin: scribae, sing. scribe), with the task of copying them. There could also be multiple chancellors, headed by a grand chancellor or archchancellor.
