About this course

The minimum entry requirement will normally be a lower second-class Honours degree. Applicants will also be considered who have a relevant professional qualification and/or extensive relevant professional or arts experience.

Course structure

The course consists of five compulsory modules (including a dissertation/project) and two (out of a choice of ten) optional modules.

Assessment

A range of methods will be used including written reports, projects (including software projects) and examination.

The creative and cultural industries sector is a fast-expanding and economically strong one. The course equips you with academic, practical and professional skills and abilities in research, analysis, production and communication appropriate to a wide range of careers. Many of these skills and abilities are transferable and combine well together. If students are entering the sector, the course provides them with key intellectual, professional and vocational resources that will help them find your way in it. If they are already working in the sector, the course provides an opportunity to develop key and supplementary skills and knowledge-forms that will enhance their marketability. Sub-sectors that graduates might progress to include the film industry, software (including game) design, publishing, arts and media management and fine art.

It involves teaching and learning in three areas. Firstly, it teaches key relevant professional skills in cultural management (including arts management, cultural policy and small-business accounting), research and project development (including project management), personal career development (including professional self-analysis and team-building) and sector analysis. Secondly, it provides basic instruction in appropriate vocational skills such as digital imaging, scriptwriting, marketing, digital video production and journalism. Thirdly, it offers a sound academic grounding in knowledge relevant to the creative and cultural sector (including history, theory and economy of media institutions in significant sub-sectors such as television, film, fine art and journalism).
